International Day of Friendship
Today marks the United Nations International Day of Friendship so I wanted to take some time to say thank you for someone I cherish.
I say thank you a lot, more so as I get older. I think it’s important to remember small acts of grace and kindness especially when it concerns those we hold most dear.
Infant School
The best place to start is always at the beginning, so let me introduce you to mini Saschan and mini Alica. We were pretty much inseparable from day one. We shared all of the baby milestones together; lego block creations, milk and biscuits at break times, skipping ropes and even our first kiss with a boy (but that’s an embarrassing story we won’t go into).
Time
Time tick tocked on and we both moved to opposite ends of the country but even as the years went by and 6 year old me soon became 16 year old me, Alica was always in my heart. At 18 we both moved back to Birmingham and met up for the first time in over a decade and it was weird. SUPER WEIRD. I didn’t recognise the woman who stood before as Alica she was, instead, a rather beautiful stranger.
Growth
Over time we have both experienced growth. We have shared an understanding of the difficulties and turmoil of reproductive health problems as young women. Our experiences have differed in many ways but the emotional and psychological effects are similar. We smile through our pain and our happiness. We choose to let our reproductive health problems define us in a positive way. We’re still sexy (after 10am) and more importantly we choose to be strong even in our moments of weakness, because we have grown into women. Even though we haven’t spoken in a while I still hope that in 30 years time we’ll still be laughing, we may cry a little at weddings, and the birth of children and fluffy animals on charity adverts that we feel the need to save. Ultimately I hope that we’ll still have one another and maybe some middle age spread (but more each other less spread if we can help it!).
So today take some time out to show a friend some love and appreciation and let us know how it goes!
