The pectin in an apple is great for soothing inflammation and combatting wrinkles. The AHAs (Alpha-Hydroxy Acids) found in the fruit refresh and tighten skin and are used in high end face scrubs and peels found on the market.
Oatmeal is one of nature’s most versatile substances. It is nutritious, good for the skin and inexpensive. It is rich in magnesium (a key contributor to enzyme function), beta-glucans (which help to reduce cholesterol) and has anti-inflammatory properties. The saponins that it contains are a natural skin cleanser and it is used to soothe acne, rosacea and eczema.
Yoghurt contains lactic acid (an AHA and effective exfoliator), calcium, which facilitates renewal and B vitamins, which encourage cell regeneration. The result is refreshed, brighter skin with tightened pores. The biological composition of yoghurt is similar to milk, which Cleopatra notoriously bathed in to maintain her youthful skin.
Honey is a rich natural source of antioxidants which has been used as key ingredient in homeopathic concoctions for thousands of years. It has antibacterial properties and an ability to absorb and retain moisture which leaves skin soft and hydrated.
To benefit from the refining properties of apples, the moisturising effects of oats, the clarifying impact of yoghurt and the antibacterial properties of honey, try our recipe for a natural face mask.
What you will need
A slightly under-ripe apple (to get the maximum AHA benefit – pectin is broken down as an apple ripens)
One tablespoon of oatmeal (preferably organic for maximum goodness)
One tablespoon of natural yoghurt with probiotic cultures
A teaspoon of honey (preferably organic manuka)
Process
Step 1 Peel and core the apple.
Step 2 Grate the apple and mix with the oats, yoghurt and honey.
Step 3 Smooth onto your face and sit back and let the goodness get to work.
Step 4 After 15-20 minutes, rinse off with lukewarm water and pat your face dry.
Step 5 Glow!
Tip. Package portions of the mixture in glass Kilner jars and tie with ribbon and a personalised tag to make a gorgeous gift.
